Saskatchewan Mining and Minerals Acquires Operating Sulphate of Potash Facility in Saskatchewan, Advancing Integrated SOP Growth Strategy

Feb 27, 2026

Saskatchewan Mining and Minerals Inc. (SMMI) is pleased to announce the acquisition of Compass Minerals Wynyard Inc., an operating sulphate of potash (SOP) production facility in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. The acquisition marks an important milestone in SMMI’s long-term strategy to diversify sulphate-based production, grounded in quality and reliability.

The Wynyard facility has been in operation since 1984 and produces SOP for agricultural and industrial customers across North America. Under SMMI’s ownership, the facility will operate as part of an integrated sulphate production platform, supported by high-quality sodium sulphate inputs sourced from SMMI’s Chaplin, Saskatchewan operations.

The acquisition brings ownership and operational control back to Saskatchewan from the United States – closer to the skilled team that has successfully operated the Wynyard facility for decades.

“SOP has always been the natural next step for SMMI,” said Rodney McCann, President and CEO of Saskatchewan Mining and Minerals Inc. “This acquisition doubles our current business footprint and accelerates our entry into the SOP market by providing an established operating base here in Saskatchewan. We are grateful for the ongoing support of the Government of Saskatchewan, whose commitment to value-added resource development and rural investment continues to create the conditions for companies like ours to grow. Looking ahead, our next phase includes the planned construction of a 50,000 to 100,000-ton sulphate of potash production facility at our Chaplin, Saskatchewan site, further strengthening our long-term supply capability and deepening our roots in the province.”

Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State for Rural Development and Member of Parliament for Desnethe – Missinippi – Churchill River, emphasized the importance of Canadian investment in rural economic growth.

“For the workers and families in Wynyard, this is about stability and confidence that the next investments are being made right here in Saskatchewan,” said Belanger. “This facility has a long history, and pairing it with sodium sulphate inputs from Chaplin helps keep more of the benefits — paycheques, procurement, and long-term planning — in our province’s rural communities.”

Chris Beaudry, Saskatchewan Minister of Energy and Resources, welcomed the acquisition and highlighted its export significance for the province.

“This investment reinforces Saskatchewan’s position as a leader in potash and value-added resource development, strengthening the province’s competitiveness in global markets,” Minister Beaudry said. “Projects of this nature demonstrate the province’s commitment to advancing critical minerals and developing innovative agricultural products that contribute to a stronger, more resilient Saskatchewan economy. With this project being located in my constituency, it makes me happy to know that my constituents will be able to benefit from the increased economic activity.”

SMMI will work closely with the existing workforce and local partners to support a smooth transition, maintain consistent production, and ensure the continued supply of high-quality SOP to customers throughout North America.

“Our facility has a long operating history and a dedicated team,” said Dan Christensen, Plant Manager at the Wynyard facility. “Becoming part of a Saskatchewan-based organization with a clear focus on quality, reliability, and long-term investment provides the support and structure needed to deliver for our customers, while enabling ongoing operational optimization.”

The Wynyard facility will now operate as Saskatchewan Mining and Minerals (Big Quill) Inc.
